GE Refrigerator problems

I've got an older GE fridge (model TCX20ZJB)with bottom freezer. The food compartment is freezing food, even with the therostat turned to the warmest position. I've been told this is a timer problem, not a thermostat. Ideas?

It also builds up a layer of ice in the bottom of the freezer compartment, which needs to be removed weekly, or water runs out in front of the unit. Since this is an auto-defrost model, I've wondered if there is a plugged drain somewhere, and the condensation is coming inside the compartment. Yet nothing seems amiss from the back. There's an icemaker installed, but it has not worked since we've owned the beast, and the water supply is not connected to it. Thanks for your ideas!
