Depending upon where you are, gas is usually 1/3 the cost of electricity; an increase this year makes it 1/2 that of electricity to make the same amount of hot water. It costs about $800 per year to heat hot water for a family of 4 in one year using an electric water heater. A gas water heater recovers 40 gallons of water in half the time of an electric water heater. A direct vent water heater would eliminate the water problem and the chimney.
