Gas Surface Burner Lights With POOF

Spark ignition surface burners with spark ignition should spark until they sense that the flame is lit. If it doesn't light on the first try, it is suppose to try again.

Not lighting immediately can be caused by a dirty spark plug on the burner, a cracked spark plug insulator, a defective spark module and probably other things as well.

But seriously, allowing a gas range burner to be turned on without lighting could constitute a serious safety hazard and should be looked into. Those systems can be tricky to diagnose in which case I suggest she have an authorized Maytag service outlet (see the following link) look into it for her. The sooner the better IMO.
