I agree with Jay J. Forget about the ventless type. I install direct vent products from Regency Fireplace The products are top quality and very fuel effecent. The best part is two pipes in chimney, one for air for fire to burn, the second to vent the fumes out of unit. You will not be breathing in exhuast gas fumes. on point 8 I have to disagree. A unit inserted in fire place will be as efficient as unit setting on floor and will not take up space in you house. Efficiency is not so much determined by where the unit is setting but more on burner technology.
