Gas Log Fireplace "Burps"

Posted by Dodgeman on October 17th, 2001 01:34 PM

I have a natural gas fireplace in my family room that we use from time to time for aesthetic reasons. It is actually a log set (75,000 BTU) that I installed in the existing masonry wood burning fireplace. The damper is wide open, unrestricted masonry chimney, the logs are of the concrete type, and the gas comes out of a vermiculite (sp) bed. There is a set of glass doors to the fireplace opening, but they are wide open while the fire is going.
What happens after about 20 min to 1/2 hour of burning is that the fire will suddenly "woosh" or "puff". It only lasts for a fraction of a second, and then won't happen again for 5 to 15 minutes.
Any ideas as to what is causing this?
