gas fireplaces

Posted by Lauren B on October 19th, 2000 07:59 AM

My home was built in the early 1900's.We have a gas fireplace that we have no idea how many years it's been since it's been used.I'm thinking gas fireplaces are vent free,so just check the gas line, and fire it up.My husband thinks it's much more complicated than that.Does the chiminey need to be serviced, relined, opened up etc.. before starting a fire? Because isn't "vent free" exactly what it says it is? I would just like a fire this winter.
