The panels are probably pressed hardboard. They will swell and soften over the years. I was able to "rescue" the bottom panels on my doors by carefully cutting out what looks like corner moulding, but is really part of the frame. I made this cut on the inside of the door, removed the soft panels, and replaced them with 1/4 in. plywood. The new plywood panels were held in place with corner moulding.
