gaps on sides of stairs

Posted by brian on January 15th, 2003 07:25 AM

Hi all,

I pulled up the carpet on the stairs in my recently purchased house. I'd like to just go with wood stairs and was pleased to find decent oak treads that with a little sanding and stain would look great. Problem is that the stairs were poorly constructed and probably intended to be carpeted. The treads do not notch into the stringers on the sides so there is a small 1/4" or so gap on each side. It does not look good. Any ideas on what I can use to cover this gap. Quarter round seemed a logical choice, and would be straightforward to use on the treads and risers but what could I use to go round the nose of each stair? Thanks
