You also mentioned you didn't know where to look for fuses. In most cases you have a breaker that will trip when you short circuit like you did. Look for a box on the wall of the house where the electic meter is located. When you open the breaker box and look inside you will see switches. The onces that are twice as big feed 220 appliances like your dryer. Look to see if it has thrown to the off position. If so, swithch it all the way off, then all the way on. If it trips again immediately, you wired wrong. Otherwise this should take care of your problem.
