Additionally, it sounds like your goal is to open up the space to make it more spacious. If you only have 2x8 rafters above, this will impose a limitation on proper attic ventilation, and impose a limit on the R value you can achieve with insulation.

A better solution, if you'd like to open up the space would be to head off only portions you absolutely needed, and/or to remove the roof and put a clearspan roof on that required no center bearing points.

Post again for more clarity about what you intend to do, locations of walls, etc.
