I haven't found such a survey or comparison but...

Carrier and Trane both make excellent units. As an architect, I prefer Trane - I think they're made better. Carrier produces furnaces, etc. under different names (Bryant, etc.) and I've always been suspicious of a manufacturer that produces "lower line stuff" as well as the top drawer equipment.

You can save "first cost" money by buying lower efficiency furnaces but in the long run, the "Plus 90" systems are probably the way to go.

Don't get obsessed with SEER numbers as far as AC condensors are concerned. Good sturdy compressor motors and a solid case serve you better in the long run.
