furnace won't ignite

I have a Williams 'Monterey' wall furnace. When I set the thermostat to go on the furnace won't ignite. If (after opening bottom access door) I tap on the valve assembly a few time...it fires up. What's wrong? Any info will help...Thanx, Mark
