Linda, if you have a relatively new gas, oil or electric furnace, there is a filter on it that filters the air before the air enters the ducts. This filter should be changed monthly and if it gets full/clogged, it will allow the dust to get by it and cut your heating efficiency tremendously. But these filters will only trap the larger dust particles, the size that you see floating now. The smaller (micron sized) particles can be trapped by an electro-static air filter that can be added to your furnace. This will help a lot to keep the dust out of your ducts and your house.
