If the furnace is electric and does not depend upon combustion of fuel to provide the heat, the door can be solid. Oil or gas heating furnaces depend upon air for combustion. Closing off the supply of combustion air can cause asphyxiation or explosions. The appliance comes with installation instructions that show how large the louvers must be; follow them. If you do not have the instructions, get them.
