fruitless labor

This is plain old labor, in fact it resembles mining because you not only have to dig down, but you have to transport the spoils outside AND you have to reinforce the footings to avoid undermining the house. Even if the soil is fairly free of rocks, this is going to be hard, time-consuming and expensive work, and that is before you get into concrete work. When you are done, you won't get a penny more for the house (zero return on investment). Suggestion: its better to buy a house with a basement than to try to create one in a crawl space.
