The average maximum depth that frost penetrates the soil ranges from less than 3in in the southeastern corner of the state to more than 10in in the northwestern. Extreme frost penetration ranges from about 10in in the southeast to alomst 30in in the western panhandle. Factors having an importatn bearing on frost penetration are severity and duration fo temerature below freesing; condition, character and moisture content of soil; an amount and character of protective cover, including snow cover.
