In reply to Replacement of 35 year old front entrance door and jam with new door. by John E Wade on October 11th, 1999 05:12 PM [Go to top of thread]

Hi" John, If I can explain a project like you when
I'm your age, I will have no problem....
OK John I think it would be best if you replaced the
jamb where the lock used tobe, to repair it would give
more problems that its worth.
You can do one of two things,
1) cut out the bad area of the frame "lets say" 10", cut only
half way through the frame, so the frame will still be strong
then cut in a new peace of wood the same as you have taken out.
Glue and screw...but don't screw now, wait till you have refitted
lock plate, then thats in place and the door/lock works, then screw
the timber into the frame...
( I am sure, that when I screw timber onto a frame, the place where I
have put the screws always seems tobe just where I have to put the
strike-plate, and I have to do it all again)
Its a simple job,, all you have to do is take your time.
All the best John 2000.
