it is typical to cut out a joist to create access and Henry got the framing exactly right. if you're concerned about temporary support you can lay 2x4s or even 1x4s across the joists , just outboard of where your cutout will be, and screw them to the subject joist and the joists on either side of it. that's plenty to hold it up until you get it framed.
