Foundation problems

Posted by Siggy Wilde on September 6th, 2001 07:52 PM

We purchased a home that was built in 1964 that the previous owners built two additions. One on the master bedroom and the other to the kitchen. I have noticed cracks in the ceiling were the additions attach to the main house. The window in the kitchen does not close.(out of square) I crawled under the house and the soil under the layer of plastic is so soft that my knee sinks down around 3". During the summer there are 3-4" cracks that occur in the backyard. It looks as if the home was built on black mud..??? What can I do to prevent the yearly repairing of the ceiling cracks? I am also greatly concerned about the foundation of the additions. Will they break away from the rest of the house? What are my options, other that selling the house...?? Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated.
