I recommend Watco medium or dark walnut danish oil. It is asphaltum base and is absorbed more readily than Minwax. Do your experimentation on table or chair bottom. If you do use Watco, let it dry a good week or so and then wipe it down really well before using a sanding sealer before final finish (or use JB Moser Grain Filler paste from Woodworker Supply, which is a heavy-bodied acrylic-base filler that you just apply with a squeegie so you don't have to spray).OR, with Watco you can just use lemon oil over it for oil rubbed look instead of lacquer/poly etc. Most of my office furniture has this finish. Buy the book "Understanding Wood Finishes" by Bob Flexner, available on Amazon I think. Luck, Kizmet
