The deadbolt is in and works perfectly. However, my mortising technique needs a little practice. Guess that comes with time. I learned a few things on this project...such as:
1. Don't apply a lot of pressure to the drill, let IT do the work
2. Don't use the paper template as a guide for the SIZE you need to chisel out for the latch plate...use the latch plate itself! (I chiseled out a space that is about 1/4" too tall for the latch plate, so I guess I can patch the space with wood putty?)
3. I CANNOT screw a 3" screw into a wood stud by HAND. No matter how hard I tried, all I succeeded in doing was spraining my wrist. So I went out and bought a drill with a selection of screwdriver bits and voila...screw's in nice and tight!
Thanks for asking, it works perfectly. Couldn't have done it without the advice (and moral support!) I receive from all of you here on the BV board!!
