I agree with David that the 1/2" hardwood plywood should be fine for sides. Once the plywood is joined to frames and shelving, the resulting structure is going to be very strong and rigid regarless of the plywood size. I have always had 3/4" material because that is what my carpenters use. I have not actually thought about the choice between 1/2 or 3/4, it was simply built with 3/4 by the carpenters I have retained.
