Tim, 1/2" sidewalls and floors, when constructed with a plywood, will put you in a "commodity" category which will keep the cost down & still provide a good, solid cabinet when well-constructed. 5/8" or 3/4" sidewalls & floors are an upgrade, even in most custom-built cabinetry. 3/4" shelves should be considered, but is not absolutely necessary for sidewalls.

Personally, I think either one, again, when well-constructed, will serve you well.
