foam insulation

Posted by Jennifer on January 5th, 1998 02:08 PM

I have a short crawl space under my 1947 brick bungalow. There is no insulation now, and consequently I have some drafts. I don't want to use fiberglass insulation due to the dampness inherent in the crawlspace (will compact and droop), and am not crazy about the sheets of hard foam insulation--they trap moisuture against the wood. How about the blown foam insulation? Specifically:

1. Safety--does it emit gases? (Like formaldehyde)
2. Cost--how much does it usually cost vs. other types of insulation (my house is only 860 SF)?
3. Can I rent the equipment and do it myself?
4. Are there local companies to do it? (Charlotte, NC)
