Just did it. Took out the tob/shower and the floor was gone. Couldn't even walk on it. You need to cut out to the joists to make shure is has good structure under it. If you can't you can add cross bracing between the joist and nail to that but I really hate patches. There are many floor leveling products, one is 'C-CURE, Level Cure LCB' Don't know where you can get it but call around. It will fill all the cracks/gaps and level the floor too.
