I have refinished the wood floors in two houses now and installed a new wood floor in the kitchen. I'm a big fan of wood. Once you've had it it's hard to go back to anything else! I would, however, recommend taking the time to do it right. If you're going to do it yourself (it's not brain surgery) practice first on some plywood to get the feel for a floor sander and to keep from sanding grooves in your floor. Most rental places have circular floor sanders you use to get next to the walls. It may take several days to sand, stain, and polyurethane, but it's worth it in the long run. You'll get years of good wear out of the floor before having to do it again. Good luck.
