Floor Joist Support Beam Integrity

Posted by Terry Bieberle on January 15th, 2000 12:11 PM

I am remodeling a basement which has a floor joist support beam that runs down the center of the house the entire length of the basement. It is made up of 3 2"x10"'s nailed together and supported by 3" posts about every 9'. When they installed the furnace, they put the duct work and furnace on one side of the beam and the return air on the other side of the beam. I am wanting to put everything on the same side, but I would have to go through the beam to tie into the duct work since it is in a hallway. I am going to bulid 2 more 3" posts to support the beam where I cut it, but I will have one floor joist that will not be supported. What can I do about this or is there a better way to do all of this?
