I'm not an expert but:
I think you could sand these planks down to the wood.
If the wood is discolored, you may be able to bleach it to lighten it.
You might want to stain and finish a very small section to see how it matches.
Remember, the stain looks different once the finish is applied and dries.
There are places that will custom blend a stain for a closer match.
Like you said, It will never come out perfect, but will not be noticable if you
take your time. You can take more time just doing one small section where the
the professional cannot make much money at your small job. Make sure to learn
about the basics: i.e., about the finish raising the grain and buffing it smooth,
make sure to screen sand between coats.
Try to get some advice about blending this area with the rest of the floor.

Or simply do what I would do. Put a throw rug down and let the next owner worry about it!
