I called the power company. They came out and put a voltmeter on my meter. The voltage was unbalanced and marginally low (232 instead of 240). He opened the pad mounted transformer that feeds our house, and fire ants had built a mound 1-1/2 foot high completely engulfing the neutral bars on the secondary. He tapped the neutral cables lightly and they broke from the lugs! Moisture from the mound had coroded the aluminum wires over time. He killed the ants, re-seated the neutral wires in new lugs, made the connections, problem fixed. It's like we have a new house! The repair was free! Thanks for the tip to call the power company.
