Sounds like you pretty much have to start over... The ruts and holes are fairly easy to fix, using a grader. If the ground has been compacted by vehicles driving on it, you may want to go over it with a disk harrow, the a fine harrow and finally a drag, then reseed the yard. This will loosen the soil for better water and fertilizer penetration and will eliminate your ruts and "craters". If you are going this far you may want to try to change the slope of the yard, but I'd consult a landscape engineer before doing this to make sure you don't get water in your basement or adversly effect your neighbors property.
