There are 5 steps from my basement down to my sub-basement (both levels are relatively finished). The steps are very uneven; they range from about 9 to 15 inches for some reason. They are cement with ugly broken laminate on top; the cement continues on to the basement floor. I'd like to fix the stairs and then just carpet the whole thing.
I heard that there are pre-assembled stairs that can somehow be laid on top of the pre-existing ones. The guy at Home Depot didn't know what I was talking about but had no other suggestions. Do such stairs exist (and if so, where can I get them and what are they called), and if not, is there a relatively simple way to fix the stairs?
