Linda, To get an idea about fishing through walls,
look at the framing of your garage. Assuming it
is without drywall, this gives a good model of
what you need to consider--you need to start
between 2 wall studs. Then you'll see 2 2x4's at
the top of the studs. These need to be notched out
to run the wire through, (that's after you cut out
a 3x5 or so piece of drywall to see the wire reach
the ceiling. Then you need to locate the above
floor joists and fish wire between them to your
fan box hole in the middle of the ceiling. Be sure to
use a fan brace bar kit, and not just an elec box
for fan fastening. Good luck, post back or better
yet e-mail (are you and your son by chance in NJ?)
if you need more help. This can be challenging and
lengthy to explain in writing.
