One reason Ben Franklin invented a stove with doors to cover the fire and a steam heat system was to stop the fires that burned down many of the houses that would have been historic otherwise. He also started the first fire companies in this country. I hope you keep one eye open while you sleep all night with a nice fire near your lacy curtains. Perhaps a friend can stay awake with a fire extinguisher at the ready.

Remember, a fireplace needs fresh air coming across the room to feed the fire, that's why they had wing chairs and bed curtains in castles. I like the romance of the fireplace without increased drafts, worry, smoke, ash, and chopping. The first romantic embers that pop out of the fire to dance across the rug will make for many nervous moments.

Home depot sells a great electric fireplace that looks just like a fire, needs no flue, heats, you can buy it for about $400 and it requires no installation cost.
