Finishing trick for wood/glass door

Posted by Andrew in NY on December 26th, 2000 09:31 AM

Happy Holidays!

I just received a new rear exterior door that I will stain and varnish prior to installation. The door is fir, with insulated panes of glass in the top half. My question is, are there any tricks I can use or special products to keep the stain and varnish off the glass? I did this job on another door, and the materials seemed to find their way under/through/around the tape. I then had to spend a lot of time removing the stain and varnish from the glass.

I had seen a 'liquid tape' product on TV which was brushed on. It then dried into a film, which was easily peeled off after painting. I do not recall the name of the product, and the owner of my local hardware store just gave me a funny look when I asked about it. My next stop will be my local paint store, then as a last resort, Home Depot. Has anyone had any experience with this product? Does anyone know the brand name?

Any other tricks or tips I could try?

Thanks in advance for any help.
