I have been researching how to best refinish an old cedar deck. I have had nothing but bad luck with clear finishes and had some recent success with a solid colour stain. I pine (pardon the pun) for the look of the clear cedar being hidden by the stain, however, and would like to give clear finishes another shot. I recall someone telling me that the problem with the original finish was that moisture was seeping in through the unprotected side of the board causing the finish on the surface to fail. It sounds far-fetched and bang-on at the same time: finish all four sides of the board!
I would like to hear from any one who has some thoughts or experiences with this suggestion.
