Finishing a new fir exterior door

Posted by Jim Evenson on November 6th, 2002 09:24 PM

I'm about to have a new exterior door installed. It is unfinished fir, and will be protected by a storm door. I'd like to put a fairly dark stain on this door in keeping with the look of the previous door, which looks like it was probably some kind of mahogany veneer. I've done some experimenting on a few pieces of fir I had laying around the shop. On one piece, I put down some sanding sealer, and then attempted to get a reasonably dark finish using 1:1 Minwax red mahogany & jacobean (determined after everything else came out much too light). After three coats, the test wood wasn't near dark enough, and the wood wouldn't absorb any more. No doubt due to the sanding sealer. I'm rather concerned about using minwax over an unsealed surface because I'm afraid the fir will soak it up too fast and I'll risk a blotchy job. Does anyone have any good suggestions? I need to get this finished pretty quickly after it's hung.
