Finish for pine shelves - Henry?

Posted by Andrew in NY on March 6th, 2001 09:16 AM

I just recently built some wall-mounted shelves out of 1x10 pipne boards. I sanded them and rounded off the edges. I stained them with Minwax Puritan Pine oil-based stain, and they are relatively smooth. I am wondering if anything else is necessary. The shelves will hold some books and knick-knacks, and will get light to moderate use. I was trying to avoid any kind of polyurethane product, as I want them to look a little rustic. Would wax or shellac be my best bet? Any suggestions on brands, # of coats, techniques? Do I even need to put anything on them?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
