Finding studs in your plaster wall

Posted by Isidro on February 16th, 1999 03:46 AM

I am having a hell of a time finding studs in my plaster walls. I bought home-depot's premiere stud detector but it has not work as I expected. I have drilled small holes about two inches apart in my wall to see if I hit a stud but it is sometimes hard to see without drilling a bigger hole. Some people told me that a 2x4 inch stud is standard and it is located every (2 feet?) apart (horizontally or vertically?). My house was built in 1957. Is there a way to get the blueprints? I do not want to continue drilling tons of holes just to find studs, it may even be dangerous since I could drill through an electrical wire. Any suggestions?
