I know the stuff you're talking about that began to disintegrate after a few years--hadthe same problem in Atlanta but Hardiplank is not that stuff (can't remember what it's called) and we have installed and are extremelyhappy with the Hardiplank. It was very easy to install and paint; theonly bad thing was cutting as the dust is very bad to breathe so you would want to wear a mask and cut outdoors with a fan blowing the dust away from you. Home Depot now carries special saw blades for cutting it so that might make a difference in the dust aspect.
