Diane, is this a one-piece faucet, or does each valve mount separately? If they mount separate, you may have them installed backwards.
One other possibility is depending on the faucet, you may be able to switch the internals of the valves with each other. This is usally just a matter of removing the handle, unscrewing the retainer, and removing the valve from the valve body & replacing it in the opposite side of the body. Usually a left-hand valve & a right-hand valve are otherwise exactly the same, and can be transposed, one side of the valve body to the other.
