I have just replaced a 4-wire (3-speed)
ceiling fan switch after the chain was pulled out by my son. It left the fan running at 'top' speed unable to turn it off.
After installing the new switch(same wiring as old), the fan wouldn't turn at all though it does try on one speed. The switch is fine (checked continuity at each setting) and I am wondering if I have a capacitor challenge. I also checked continuity on the old switch and it is open across all 4 points which is why I suspect capacitor challenges.
