Paul, I would need to know exactly what wires and what colors and combined into what separate sheathed electrical cable sheaths/conduits for the ceiling box and the switch box and then what each wire is hooked to help you out over the net. There are drawings available.

Steve S. is right that you would need a third conductor wire(not a ground wire). However the red is not necessarily always a constant power supply. You may also need a double gang work box for 2 switches and you probably only have a single now.

They do make a remote control for these fans that installs in the ceiling box and works like a tv remote. Then you don't have to run new wires and boxes.
