I like the grooved or plowed redwood for facia. It does need priming and then a couple of coats of paint, but in the long run if the drip edge is installed and the shingles overhang about 3/4 inch, this will ensure a long facia. For Soffits, I really like the 3/8 inch ply wood or the particle cardboard works well also. Soffets last long time If the roof does not leak and if you keep off the mold.

I live in Dallas, so we are up against the same weather conditions.
