Exterior Sheathing Damage - How to fix

Posted by Don on November 6th, 2000 02:58 PM

The exterior sheathing on several places on my house (where there may be seams under the batten boards) appears to have extensive water damage. It looks like the guy who owned it before we did didn't caulk very well.

I want to know how to go about replacing this, what to ask for at the hardware store (is it plywood?). Do I nail it to the frame? Screw it? Prime, then caulk? Put batten boards down, caulk then prime and paint? If the insulation is wet, will I need to (or should I) replace it?

Thanks for any advice or help at all! If it matters, the vertical batten boards are 1x2s and the horizontal one, at the bottom of the sheathing on the first story, and at the corners, are 1x4s. If I replace these, do I get certain types (cca) or what? Any certain type of caulk to use?
