Berta, Tom has the right idea; the front edge should be cut off with a saw. The edge can then be cleaned up with a router pass if need be to basically be flush with the front of the cabinets. Then glue & nail a " X 1" pine board to the front to re-create the face lip. Use 2" bullnose cap (if available in your chosen tile) to cover the front. Good luck
