It sounds like what you are describing is not necessarily "hardwood" in the traditional sense, yet is not PERGO either. Pergo is a laminate flooring with a PLASTIC finish like Formica. The "wood" is actually a photograph of wood, and if you get up close and look at it, you should be able to tell very quickly. There is, however, an engineered hardwood floor consisting of "planks" the same size and installation method as PERGO, but is actually a T&G plywood with 3 strips of hardwood veneer on top, prefinished at the factory. This is what it sounds like you have. The entire product is installed almost identical to PERGO; it is a floating floor system.
So, no. It isn't hardwood, and it isn't pergo. They didn't necessarily "lie" to you, but you didn't necessarily get what you thought either.
