electrical switch that does not operate

Posted by Cynthia Huisman on November 21st, 2002 05:41 PM

When we moved into our home the study has three light sockets and one switch on the wall. We tried all three sockets, both top and bottom, and the switch does not work. We replaced all three receptacles and it still does not work. The switch is on the closet wall as you walk in the room. The sockets are on the other three walls. My question is: Is there a standard wiring pattern that would indicate which socket is live on the switch? I have heard that when you open the receptacle, the one with the "tab" broken off is the live socket for the switch. We did not find a tab nor a socket switch connection. Just call an electrician?
