Electrical Outlet Repair

Posted by Kristian J. Magel on February 25th, 2001 11:03 AM

I recently replaced an electrical outlet in my wall. I am afraid to turn the power back on for two reasons:

1) I am worried I attached the wrong color wires to the wrong receptacle: The white was attached to both fixtures, while the black went to one, and the red went to the other. My guess is that the white wire is "neutral," while the others are "hot." Am I correct?

2) In replacing the fixtures, the plastic coating on the white wire (the other two were black and red) was slightly damaged. Is current going to run through this wire, and is it a fire hazard?
