What did you use to test the receptacle and how did you use it?

Also I susgest that you get a book on hom wiring. I like Black and Deckers Complete Home Wring ahd Rex Cauldwell's How to Wire a House.

As a general rule the white wire is the neutral (grounded wire) and it connects to the Silver terminal. The hot is black or red and connects to the brass or dark finished terminals.

Depending on exactly what was used and how the test was done it might mean an open neutral or a false test.
