I live in a retirement community. My house has electric baseboard heat. There is a separate central air conditioning system with compressor on exterior and air handler in the attic. The supply registers are near ceiling in various rooms and there is a central return in the hall. I have no basement. The community maintenance people recommend that I leave the registers open and not cover or insulate the central return during the winter when the air conditioning is not in use. I believe that it is more energy efficient to cover them to prevent heat loss into the attic. What do you recommend?
